Production is planned for the new Waterford Crystal factory opening in early summer of 2010. The plan is to employ approx 1oo workers initially, including former craftsmen and office staff to maintain the new Visitors Center.

Waterford Crystal brand is now owned by the WWRD group which includes Wedgewood and Royal Doulton.

A group named KPS, based in New York took over the Waterford-Wedgewood plant and closed the factory doors earlier this year in 2009. The new factory location is stated to be on City council premises in the Mall area, downtown Waterford City.

The new premises will be part of the old ESB offices which includes outbuildings and a store which has been tagged as the new showroom of Waterford Crystal Ireland. Announcements for the revival of production was welcomed by City officials and an injection of capital in the region of $7 million was estimated to get this project up and running.

The new production line will include signature pieces, trophies, and master cutter one of a kind show pieces and approx 25,000 crystal pieces are expected to be produced each year.

According to officials, a new tank furnace will be in place for the production of the blowing room and other departments include sculpting, cutting and engraving.

It is expected that the initial100 employee workforce will be divided equally between craftsmen and visitor center operations, with plans to increase depending on demand.

Although this new site is temporary, plans are in the works for a building on the riverfront, where the new Waterford Crystal plant will again adorn the 1,000 year old Viking City. This glorious return of the iconic brand will be back in full swing sometime in 2014.

Meanwhile, tourists can come visit the Waterford Crystal artisans perform extraordinary feats of craftsmanship and listen to the blowers singing “I’m forever blowing bubbles” once again.

Tour operators and Waterford officials are ecstatic at the news of the revival of this almost lost trade and promise to keep offering the customer service that is synonymous of the Waterford people.

Local Unions and business people have been in talks over the past few months with owners KPS and welcomed the new venture which will be promoted through The World Travel Market in England and across the sea to the United States. Approx 100,000 visitors are expected to take in the factory tour next year, while shopping at the visitor’s center for that special unique crystal gift.
